4/16/12: FLINT: Emergency manager sends wrong message by backing off budget deadline (MLive) 4/4/12: Flint fire union reaches tentative agreement with emergency manager Michael Brown (MLive) 3/20/12: Judge removes Flint emergency manager, restores mayor and city council; State planning appeal (MLive) 2/29/12: Emergency manager law opponents rally in Detroit, prepare to bring 218,297 signatures to Lansing (MLive)
2/23/12: Thanks for everyone who called at a moment’s notice. I did hear back from legislators that they had received calls. They need to know that if they do this or attempt it, that we won’t just sit down and let it happen.
2/23/12: IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!!! We just heard today that the Republican controlled House and Senate intend on slightly modifying the current Emergency Manager Law and ramming it through today!! This will mean that the newly modified law will be reissued as a different Public act thus voiding all of our signatures while maintaining this horrible law!! Just as when they passed the current law last year and took away the will of the people, they intend on doing it again! Please contact your Representative and Senator NOW!
Find your Representative: http://www.house.mi.gov/mhrpublic/ Tell them that this is the will of the people and they are denying it. Let the democratic process play out as intended. Tell them that you are tired of their Big Government policies taking away our rights. This petition process is built in to allow the PEOPLE to decide if what the legislature did was appropriate. And they are denying us that DEMOCRATIC right!
2/21/12: Finally!!! Enough Signatures Collected to Repeal PA 4 - Emergency Manager Powers 2/22/12: EM law opposition confident (Detroit News) 12/31/11: ECORSE: Emergency manager, fire official, give department update (News-Herald) 12/8/11: State retooling emergency manager law (Detroit Free Press) 12/3/11: State orders Detroit financial review (Detroit Free Press)
12/1/11: More Signatures Needed!!! Another step in the process has started and people are needed to assist. The official verification of the signatures is done by the Secretary of State after the petitions are turned into the SOS, but those of us involved in the gathering of the signatures are now able to do an informal verification of the signatures ourselves to insure that we have enough valid ones when the petitions are finally turned in to the SOS. All that is needed from you is a few hours of your time. The work is being done at the AFSCME 25 office in Detroit. They are doing this M-F from 9-5 and from 10-3 on Saturdays. They will also consider evening hours and additional weekend hours if enough people agree to attend. All you have to do is call Mario at 386-675-2484 the day before you are planning on helping so they can insure that a computer will be available for you to help. After a quick 10 minute training session, you are given a stack of petitions and you simply type in the name of each person on the petition and the program will prompt you on everything else. Each signature takes about 15 seconds to process. So far, they have verified approximately 74,000 signatures but they still have almost 100,000 more that need to be processed. The sooner we have 161,000 valid signatures processed, the sooner we can get this terrible law suspended. Please grab a friend bring them with you to help with this very important effort to Repeal PA 4. IAFF members in Ecorse, Benton Harbor, Flint, and Pontiac are already being affected and several other communities are already being targeted. Let's stop this now, before anymore harm is done to our brothers and sisters.
Michigan AFSCME Council 25 Ample parking is available in the fenced in area behind the building. 11/29/11: Former Acting Mayor Michael Brown named Flint's emergency manager (Flint M-Live)
11/4/11: Get Your Petitions Turned In ASAP!!! 10/24/11: Important Message on Repealing PA 4 from Pontiac Local 376
10/21/11: We Still Need 62,000 More Signatures!!! Every MPFFU local was mailed petitions several weeks ago. Approximately 4,000 signatures were returned. That is only about one per MPFFU member. We MUST do better than that!! A rumor began circulating last month that enough signatures had been collected. Because of that rumor, many people stopped collecting new signatures and turning in their petitions that were completed. If you have petitions that are completed, please return them to the MPFFU NOW! You can also bring them to our seminar in Detroit next week. If you have blank petitions, please continue to gather more signatures. If you need more petitions, please call the MPFFU office and we will mail more to you. 734-675-0206. MPFFU members in Ecorse, Pontiac, and Benton Harbor are all currently under the thumb of an Emergency Financial Manager. Several other communities are already in the early stages of a financial review which is the first step to appointing an Emergency Manager. Will your City be next? This is something that every MPFFU member can take part in to help their brothers and sister union members. Please take a few minutes and get your family, neighbors, and friends to sign the petitions. Take a friend and go door to door for a few blocks in your own neighborhood. This is a very easy petition to get people to sign. Everyone you talk to will agree it is a bad concept.
