    Commerce Township FD has received a SAFER grant award for 8 firefighter positions.

    Commerce is looking to hire 9 in January and all nine are budgeted for, with a corresponding millage rate that will allow Commerce to retain all 9 positions after the grant expires.

    General Statement of Duties:

    To perform a variety of tasks when called upon, to respond to any emergency including but not limited to; engage in the combating, extinguishing and prevention of fires. To answer medical calls, extricate and rescue individuals from fires and entrapment, respond to hazardous material calls, and the operation and maintenance of all fire department equipment and property.

    Typical examples of work:

    A Firefighter may be called upon to do any or all of the following:  (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

    • Respond to fire alarms, connect and control hose lines and nozzles, erect ladders, turn water on or off and use extinguishers, axes, hooks and lifelines.
    • Operate fire fighting apparatus, pumps and other auxiliary fire equipment.
    • Respond to emergency calls removing persons from danger and/or applying emergency medical techniques for life-threatening injuries.
    • Respond to rescue calls, operate auxiliary power equipment and/or deploy rescue boat and other gear during search and rescue work.
    • Perform general cleaning and maintenance work in the upkeep of a fire station, care for grounds and make minor repairs.
    • Wash and dry hose.
    • Wash, clean and polish fire apparatus.
    • Prepare meals.
    • Participate in fire prevention inspections.
    • Make periodic inspections, flow tests and maintenance of fire hydrants.
    • Prepare accident and fire reports and other records.
    • Participate in overhaul and salvage operations.
    • Participate in drills and other departmental training functions.
    • Perform related work as required.
    • Ability to work under pressure individually and in a team setting.
    • Follow orders and understand the Chain of Command

    Desirable qualifications/traits for employment:

    • Knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations in the Township.
    • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
    • Mechanical aptitude and mental alertness.
    • Physically sound and active.
    • Willingness to perform any assigned task.
    • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees.
    • College
    • Emergency service experience
    • Paramedic License
    • Military service

    Requirements at the time of application include:

    • Graduation from an accredited high school, plus some responsible work experience.
    • Must have Fire Fighter I and II training as required by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council
    • Must possess a valid Michigan Basic EMT certification or higher with valid CPR card.
    • Must have Hazardous Materials Operation Level.
    • Must have and required to maintain a valid and unrestricted State of Michigan drivers license
    • Must be 18 years of age.
    • A United States citizen.
    • No felony convictions.
    • Copy of driving record from Secretary of State indicating good driving record.
    • Current CPAT Certificate
    • Written Testing Certificate from the Conference of Western Wayne

    2020 MPFFU Convention Information

    The 54th Biennial Convention of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union is going to be held on April 28-29-30, 2020 at the Amway Grand Plaza, Curio Collection by Hilton. 

    Convention committees will meet on April 27th. There will also be a welcome reception in the evening on April 27th.  Anyone planning on attending this convention should make their hotel reservations as soon as possible.  It is recommended that you arrive on April 27th and check-out on April 30th. 

    Hotel reservations can be made online now by clicking here.  Information for registering delegates, alternates, and guests for the convention will be posted here when it becomes available.

    1. Visit the MPFFU online store to pay with a credit card for your district meeting and seminar registrations.
